KARAOKE BEDLAM
Curated by Thea Baumann
10PM TIL LATE
2ND DECEMBER 2006
DON’T
TELL MAMA
226 BRUNSWICK STREET
FORTITUDE VALLEY
Above a railway station, opposite a $1 dollar peep show, and up a flight
of moonshine stained stairs, Karaoke Bedlam tunnels into the back-alleys
of Chinatown’s subcultural underground, and takes over a Korean
karaoke club. For one fleeting night, ‘Don’t Tell Mama’
becomes an immersive labyrinthine dungeon of audio-visual installation,
screenings, and costumed performance.
 |
 |
Incarcerated in their own karaoke ward room, Karaoke Bedlam presents
the work of a series of artists exploring karaoke and music video clip
culture as it can be channelled through the lens of hallucination and
surrealism, chaos and nihilism, subconscious and the unconscious, sanity
and schizophrenia. From delusions of grandeur that surround the cult of
the pop-idol celebrity, to booty RnB strip-tease role-playing, to fantastical
visions of mermen singing sea shanties, Karaoke Bedlam invites audiences
to enter the Karaoke Bedlam wards and become voyeurs into claustrophic
worlds of audio-visual madness and karaoke induced psychoses. |

POP SCREENINGS + KARAOKE GREEN ROOM
MANHUA WONDERLANDS DVD
Screen works developed through media art community workshops underscores
a karaoke green room and links into a rhizomatic Simultaneous State-Wide
Screening.
JOE WALSH (UK): MISTER MIGUEL
Lin King performances practice with 80s pop video aesthetics, a
music video for Kevin Blechdom’s ‘Mister Miguel. A woman
emerges from smoke. She has something to tell you against the modern
pop beat. Lights blink on and off to various delusional sexual thoughts.
Referencing David Bowie in his video to “Heroes”, it
is an undoing of his performance, reconfigured by a woman.
JOSEPHINE STARRS (AUST): POCKET CALCULATOR
A reworking of Kraftwerk’s infamous Pocket Calculator track. |

SPAT+LOOGIE
NATIONAL TREASURES
A wild mash up of patriotic karaoke and the pleasures of tourism.
Spat+loogie take nationalistic songs and inject them with a healthy
dose of cynicism, irony and kitsch. ‘Australia’ the
video, uses layered video effects to remix existing clips of cultural
imagery with spat+loogie’s own earnest nationalistic voices.
Indulging in stereotypes of Australian identity one minute, then
undercutting them with our country’s history of violence and
inequality the next. This work uses humour, colour, energy and After
Effects to revitalize our nationalistic anthems. |

CHROMOPHONOZONE
Chromophonozone was a series of one-night gatherings that occurred
at Don’t Tell Mama, a Karaoke club in Fortitude Valley’s
Chinatown. Through donning masks constructed out of photographic
facial features attached to highly decorative and optical fabric
balaclavas, participants become anonymous cosplayers (costume players),
who were requested to choose a song and perform within the carnivalesque
atmosphere.
The title Chromophonozone aims to also highlight the prominence
of the body within this project, as it is a word – play on
‘chromosome’. Chromophonozone is a composite of three
words that relate to the major aspects of the project. All of these
aspects are registered specifically in relation to the body:
1. Chromo – relating to colour, pigment,
saturation and chroming (the illegal practice of inhaling chemical
substance for a high, usually associated with metallic spray paint).
2. Phono – relating to sound and speech
patterns in the construction of language
3. Zone – the designation of a specific
area for a specific purpose usually relating to space but also time,
perhaps? |

THE MURMURING MERMAN
Spat…a baby oyster out
Let go your shrill siren vocals for the art of karaoke.
Skin and tail an iridescent burst of blue with rainbow tiger stripes.
Dark blue hair: trickles trailing into tentacles. A merman out of
water, you hop around on the spot. Cement your lament. The audience
blows bubbles.
The webbed spur of the platypus paw- a poison filled nib. Sink
into the ink of the fountain pen- the drooled scrawl. The southern
drawl. The scent of an accent. The sperm whales enemy- the giant
squid from his hair - the depths of despair.
Blue terror as the soldier crabs march sideways across the shore.
Spawn yawn
Devour fish with bare hands. His nimble hands glide over the slippery
body. Bring it to his mouth and chew it through sharp shark teeth.
Spill over his face and dribble down his neck.
A frozen ocean
Icicle trickles of the testicles
The merman is a showman. He misses the sea and feels very home-sea
sick. The karaoke room carries him back home. Murmuring merman will
sing along to any song (as long as it has some reference to the
sea).
The blue that creeps through |

COLLAPSICON
CORRUPT KARAOKE SMASH HITS
Corrupt karaoke smash hits are karaoke tracks that have endured
Collapsicon’s patented Extreme Digital Data Corruption Process
(EDDCP). Filtered through a process called “Data Bending”,
this technology allows you to experience what a video clip would
look like if you left it in the sun for 80 years, broadcast it through
satellite transmission, and generally abused the digital data to
the point of “just” being able to play it back. All
music has been lovingly recreated with the lowest 8bit micro chip
music technology.
COLLAPSICON PERFORMS 11:00 – 11:30 PM
PLAY LIST:
Freeze pop – Tennis Boyfriend
Eurythmics – Who’s that girl
Billy idol – White Wedding
Dead Kennedys – Holiday in Cambodia |

TEMPORARILY OUT OF ORDER
Temporarily Out of Order is designed to simulate a malfunctioning
karaoke environment through fractured / randomised video, glitches
and jumpcuts. The image and sound have been edited/manipulated/deconstructed
utilising a variety of manual and algorithmic processes from actual
karaoke material obtained from discount bins across Brisbane. The
work is inspired by random processes and potentially dangerous environments
and how the audience interacts with these . |

THE ULTRAVIOLET EVALUTION PRESENTS AN IMAGINATION :SUPRNATION PRODUCTION
SWEET NOTHING VOL. 1:5 A.K.A SEX, LIES AND CELESTIAL DISGUISE A.K.A
TWENTY47NINEELEVEN
FEATURING: SEXI DISLEXI, GLUTEUS “6PAC” MAXIMILLIUS,
VAGINA “BABYFACE” WOOLF, CLAIR VOYEUR, URETHRA FRANKLIN,
POLLY SYLLABIQ, ANNA GRAM, MARVIN “G-RAPE” FAGGOTT.
From the deep dank void of the Nothingness of Being comes a perverse
and degenerate pantomime of panties, puppetry and voodoo ventriloquism.
Channelling insurgent visions from the RNB MTV universe, the Alphachemical
Spectrum, the nether regions of An-atom-y, and those things that
inspire feeling: bitches, gunz and Godd, Sweet Nothing Vol 1:5 ushers
in a new era of apocalyptic sex, success and excess. In a demented
cabaret format, the Angelic and Arseholic battle it out, Love attains
confusing nihilistic proportions, and the debris is reconstituted
into the New World Aura. |
